Facial volume loss is a common sign of skin aging and can cause you to look tired and run down. It’s most often noticeable in the mid and lower part of the face. That’s because as you age, important proteins and hydrating substances that keep the skin bouncy and plump decrease, resulting in sagging. A quick and easy way to address this problem is with dermal fillers.
The team at the Spa MD offers a wide variety of injectables to help you combat skin aging and restore a glowing, youthful appearance. Whether you’re looking to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles or restore volume, we use the latest available aesthetic solutions to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.
When clients come in to see us with concerns about facial sagging, they often have questions about dermal fillers. One of the primary questions is what are dermal fillers? The other common question is, how do I choose the dermal filler that’s right for me? In this post, we answer these questions and discuss the advantages of dermal fillers for you to consider and discuss with your Spa MD provider.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectables designed to replace volume loss due to aging. As you age, you lose volume in and around the cheek area, resulting in a sunken appearance and the development of a nasolabial fold (more commonly known as a smile line). Volume loss also results in a less defined jawline. Placing filler in target areas gives you instant correction and improvement from volume loss. This is an ideal option for clients wanting immediate results.
Types of fillers
There are two main types of fillers; hyaluronic acid-based and calcium-based.
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers
Hyaluronic acid is already a major component in your skin. It’s responsible for keeping your skin hydrated. As you age the substance decreases significantly. This group of fillers is made using naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, which is extremely safe and effective. There’s no need for skin testing or allergy testing. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are often the option of choice for many clients looking to restore lost volume and reverse the signs of aging. The hyaluronic-based fillers offered at The Spa MD include:
The difference between these hyaluronic injectables is molecule size. Dermal fillers with a larger molecule size provide the most dramatic lifting effect. Larger molecule fillers are ideal for lifting the cheeks and restoring a youthful appearance to the mid-facial area.
Belotero is a very small molecule filler that’s excellent for restoring volume under the eyes. If you’re concerned about a sunken appearance under the eyes, your provider may recommend Belotero.
Your provider will discuss your goals, examine your skin, and help you choose the appropriate filler that will provide the best results.
The other main difference is how the product connects to your own proteins once injected. This is known as crosslink technology. Fillers with newer crosslink technology last longer (12 months, compared to six months).
Calcium-based fillers
Calcium compounds are the main ingredient in calcium-based fillers. Calcium is the same substance that makes up your bones and teeth. Because of this, calcium-based fillers are ideal for filling in bony areas of the face, such as the jawline, chin, and nose, as well as to help build up the cheekbone area. The result is an improved facial contour with added definition. Radiesse® is our calcium-based filler of choice.
